Spojrzenia

Bartosz Maciejewski is a portrait photographer. Fascinated by photographic street art for many years, he photographs people noticed in a crowd and encountered on the street with the same passion as public figures. He collaborates with leading Polish media and book publishers, creating portraits of major personalities from the worlds of culture, art and sport. His previous exhibitions include “Sami” (2012), “Disappearing Harlem” (2014), “Urban Jungle” (2015), “In a Bubble” (2016) and “London Outsider” (2018). He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw and studied image creation at Holmes Institute in Melbourne. He lives in Warsaw.

The “Spojrzenia” exhibition is organised by Anywhere.pl Media Platform, with Fabryka Norblina as its strategic partner. It presents Bartosz Maciejewski’s photographs known from dozens of covers of Anywhere.pl airport magazines and other lifestyle publications. The selection brings together more than 100 portraits of personalities from the worlds of culture, art and sport. Maciejewski, long fascinated by urban photography, has chosen this time to present his portrait work. The photographs reveal spontaneous, authentic reactions and emotions. The artist has a gift for immediately establishing a direct, vivid connection with his subjects. He is fascinated by them and searches for their essence. The images can be compared to Japanese haiku: restrained and minimalist, because form and concept matter less than the desire to look into another person’s soul. Bartosz’s style is unmistakable, full of respect for the individual, simplicity and light.

According to legendary photographer and photojournalist Chris Niedenthal, light is the essence of Bartosz Maciejewski’s craft. “Light is the most important element in every field of photography, but it is especially precious in portraiture. Its direction, intensity, contrast or even its absence creates images that can become banal in unskilled hands. In Bartosz’s work they gain strength; they are true, original, surprising and memorable. That is a great skill. His portraits are recognisable — one can immediately say: yes, this photograph was made by Maciejewski. He has a masterful sense of timing, gaze, background and composition, and he beautifully understands the power of light,” Niedenthal emphasises.

The “Spojrzenia” exhibition presents the strongest photographs and press covers from more than 50 sessions created for Anywhere.pl Media Platform, with which the artist has been associated for years. It also includes selected works resulting from his collaboration with Gentleman Magazine and other publications.
